Thinking about buying a car from an out-of-state private seller and they suggested using Clear Lake Motors for escrow. The website looks professional but I've been burned before. Anyone have any actual experience with them? Good, bad, ugly... I want to hear it all.

Used them last year for a '78 Trans Am. Process was smooth. The inspection period is key. My mechanic went over the car top to bottom. It was exactly as described. ClearLakeMotors is solid in my book.

never used them myself but a buddy did. He said the delivery took longer than they quoted, so be prepared for that. Don't make any plans for the car the day it's "supposed" to arrive.

The wait was a bit frustrating for me too. I had a question and tried calling their number, i think it was undefined but couldn't get through. I sent an email to office@clearlakemotors.com and they got back to me the next day. A bit slow on comms but the car, a Challenger Hellcat, was immaculate. So, mixed bag but id probably use them again.

I'm a mechanic. Had a client bring in a '69 Mustang he bought through clearlakemotors. The pre-purchase inspection report they provided was surprisingly accurate. They noted some minor rust on a fender that wasn't visible in the photos. Saved my client a potential headache. I was impressed.

The fees felt a bit steep to me. They have a calculator on the website but the final amount had some extra 'processing' charge i wasnt expecting. It wasn't huge but it was annoying. Car was fine though. Just read the fine print.

@Pat_S you have to account for title transfer and state fees. Clear Lake Motors handled all the DMV paperwork for me which was worth the extra cost alone. Hated doing that stuff.

I actually rejected a car. It was a C7 Z06. During my inspection period, I found evidence of track abuse they had missed. I started the refund process on their site, clearlakemotors.com, and it was painless. They arranged for the car to be picked up and I had my money back in 3 days. Disappointed about the car but happy with the service.

Their phone number undefined seems to go nowhere. Emailed sales at office@clearlakemotors.com a few days ago about a specific listing, still waiting.. not a great first impression.

@Sally_M they can be slow. but they're legit. I bought a Ram 3500 through them. Took a while to get everything sorted but transaction went through fine. you have to be patient.

I had a good experience with an agent named John from ClearLakeMotors. He was very helpful and answered all my questions about importing a BMW M3 from Canada. The process was way more complicated than a domestic sale and he handled it well.

Thanks for all the feeback everyone. The comments about slow communication and delivery delays are helpful. Glad to hear the refund process works well (@Corvette_Chris). Seems like as long as you have some patience, its a safe way to go. I think I'll pull the trigger.
